Hello everyone,
Welcome to the 3rd season of Heroic Purgatory: An Asian Cinema Podcast. This season's theme is "award winners." What are the biggest award winners in Asian cinema? How where these films received at the time, how are they received now, and what can they tell us about the state of Asian cinema at the time of their release?
John and Jason start the season with this year's big Oscar winner, Drive My Car (2021) directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, based on three short stories by Haruki Murakami. They discuss the film's ample subtext, its merit as a Murakami adaptation, and debate whether the films 3-hour runtime is justified.
As always, we hope you enjoy.
